Flight Training Pathway

Step-by-step guide to becoming a commercial pilot in USA

1

Student Pilot Certificate (FAA SPL)

• Issued after FAA medical + TSA approval (for foreign students).
• No flying hours yet, but this certificate allows you to start actual flight training.
2

Private Pilot Licence (PPL – FAA)

• Foundation of flight training – learning to fly small single-engine aircraft.
• Minimum 40 hours required by FAA (realistically 55–60 hrs for most students):
o 20 hours Dual Instruction (with instructor)
o 10 hours Solo Flight (independent flying)
o 5 hours Cross-Country Solo (navigating between airports >50 NM)
o 3 hours Night Flying (including 10 take-offs & landings)
o 3 hours Instrument Training (introduction to flying by reference to instruments)
✅ By end of PPL: You can fly as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of small aircraft, but not for commercial purposes.
3

Instrument Rating (IR)

• Allows flying in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC), i.e., when visibility is poor and flying is based only on instruments.
• 40 hours of Instrument Time (on simulator + aircraft)
o At least 15 hours with instructor
o The rest can be a mix of simulator and actual aircraft flying
o Training includes approaches, holding patterns, and IFR cross-country flights
✅ Crucial for airline-level flying and international standards.
4

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL – FAA)

• Final stage of professional flight training.
• Requirement: 250 total flying hours (including PPL + IR stages).
o 100 hours PIC (Pilot-in-Command)
o 50 hours Cross-Country (minimum 50 NM legs)
o 10 hours Instrument Training (beyond PPL/IR minimums)
o 10 hours Complex Aircraft Training (retractable gear, constant-speed prop, flaps)
o 5 hours Night Flying (with at least 10 take-offs & landings as PIC)
o 2 Long Cross-Country Flights:
 One solo cross-country of 250 NM total distance, with landings at 3 different airports
 One cross-country flight of 100 NM straight-line distance
o Balance hours in dual + solo flying to meet 250 hrs
✅ By end of CPL: You are legally a commercial pilot under FAA, eligible to work in the USA (with work permit) or return to India for conversion.

Licence Conversion in India (FAA → DGCA CPL)

Since Indian students need a DGCA CPL to work in Indian airlines:
• Flying Hours: DGCA requires 200 hrs, FAA requires 250 hrs → already satisfied.
• Exams: Must pass DGCA theoretical papers (Air Regulations, Navigation, Meteorology, Technical).
• Skill Test: Flying check with a DGCA examiner in India.
• RTR (Aero) Licence: Required for radio communication (issued by WPC in India).
✅ After conversion, you get your Indian CPL and can apply to airlines.
